Brass is a common choice because it machines cleanly, takes a thread that holds torque over repeated service cycles, and resists dezincification when the correct alloy is specified.

Brass Check Valves: One-Way, Swing, Non-Return and Vertical

A check valve prevents reverse flow through a meter line. Reverse flow causes two practical problems: it can spin a mechanical register backwards, and it can draw water back from the installation into the supply side. A correctly sized non-return valve downstream of the meter is standard protection in most domestic and light industrial installations.

Patterns available

• One-way and non-return valves — the general-purpose pattern, closing on reverse flow
• Swing check valves — a hinged disc that opens fully with forward flow and gives low pressure loss, often used where flow is continuous
• Vertical check valves — configured for vertical pipe runs, where a horizontal-pattern valve would not seat reliably

Plastic Strainers and Meter Protection

Strainers are low-cost parts that protect a much more expensive one. A plastic strainer fitted upstream of the meter captures sand, scale, weld slag and other debris before it reaches the measuring chamber, where grit is a common cause of a mechanical meter under-reading or seizing. Because strainers sit in the flow path, they should be inspected and cleaned on a maintenance interval and replaced when the screen is damaged.

IC/RF Cards for Prepaid Water Meters

Cards are consumable in practice — they get lost or damaged, and they need replacing when an account is transferred — so distributors usually hold card stock separately from the meters themselves.
