Mechanical Water Meter Types: Multi-Jet, Single-Jet, Woltman and Piston

A mechanical water meter measures volume with a rotating element that is driven directly by the water passing through the meter body. No external power is needed to register flow, which keeps installation, reading and maintenance straightforward — one reason mechanical meters still dominate residential, commercial and industrial metering worldwide.

Gaoxiang Water Meter Co., Ltd. has manufactured water meters since 2005 at our factory in Linyi, Shandong, China. All our water meters hold ISO 4064 regulation approval certificates; our production is ISO 9001:2008 certified and complies with national regulations for testing and metrology calibration. This page covers the four main mechanical meter families we build — multi-jet, single-jet, Woltman and piston — plus the transmission options that connect the rotor to the register.

Multi-Jet Mechanical Water Meters

In a multi-jet meter, water enters the measuring chamber through several angled ports and strikes the rotor at multiple points at once. That balanced pattern spreads the load across the rotor bearing instead of concentrating it on one side, which is why multi-jet designs are the default choice for domestic and small commercial service lines.

Multi-jet meters also handle moderate particulate load better than single-jet types because the stream is split rather than focused. Our multi-jet range includes the LXSG-15E-50E large-diameter flange mechanical water meter and the LXS15-300 pulse-output water meter with 1/10/100 Liter/Pulse output for remote reading.

  • Typical duty: household, apartment and small commercial service lines
  • Threaded bodies at smaller sizes, flanged bodies for larger diameters
  • Rotor supported on both sides for balanced running
  • Pulse-output versions for AMR/AMI or building management systems

Single-Jet Mechanical Water Meters

A single-jet meter sends the whole incoming stream through one nozzle onto one side of the rotor. Fewer parts and a compact measuring chamber keep the unit cost low, which suits high-volume residential metering programs.

The trade-off is an unbalanced load on the rotor bearing, so single-jet meters are normally specified where water is reasonably clean and flow conditions are steady. Where water quality varies or flow swings widely, a multi-jet or volumetric design usually holds up better over the long term.

  • Compact, simple construction with few moving parts
  • Best suited to clean water and stable flow profiles
  • Common in domestic and apartment sub-metering

Woltman Mechanical Water Meters

A Woltman meter — also called a turbine or helical-vane meter — uses an axial rotor that spins in line with the flow. Water travels straight through the body instead of being deflected into a chamber, so a Woltman meter passes far higher flow rates at lower pressure loss than a jet-type meter of the same connection size.

This makes it the standard family for mainlines, plant rooms, district distribution and industrial process lines. The LXLC-250E Woltmann removable-element dry-type industrial water meter covers DN50-300mm and is built with a removable measuring element, so the internal cartridge can be serviced or replaced without cutting the meter body out of the pipeline.

  • High flow capacity with low head loss
  • Removable element design for easier servicing
  • Flanged connections from DN50 to DN300mm
  • Typical duty: mains, plant rooms, district and industrial metering

Piston and Volumetric Mechanical Water Meters

A piston or volumetric meter measures water by repeatedly filling and emptying a calibrated chamber. The piston oscillates inside that chamber, and every cycle displaces a fixed volume which is transferred to the register. Because measurement is based on displacement rather than rotor speed, volumetric meters respond well to very low and intermittent flows.

The trade-off is sensitivity to particulates — a piston meter needs reasonably clean water, and an upstream strainer is advisable — plus a higher unit cost than jet-type meters. They are often chosen for sub-metering, check metering and low-flow duties.

  • Displacement measurement, well suited to low flow rates
  • Requires clean water; strainer recommended upstream
  • Common in sub-metering and check-metering applications

Mechanical and Magnetic Transmission: What to Specify

Every rotary-wing meter needs a way to carry rotor movement to the register. Two approaches dominate the market.

Mechanical vs magnetic drive

A mechanical transmission uses a gear train or shaft linkage. A magnetic drive places a magnet on the rotor and a matching magnet in the register, transmitting rotation through the meter wall with no shaft penetrating the body — so the register stays sealed from the water chamber. Magnetic coupling is the usual choice for dry-type registers; mechanical linkages remain common in simpler, lower-cost designs.

Information we need to quote accurately

  • Connection size and type (threaded or flanged) and the normal flow rate
  • Body and internal materials suited to your water chemistry
  • Register type: dry, wet, or pulse output (LXS15-300 offers 1/10/100 Liter/Pulse)
  • Water and ambient temperature range at the installation point
  • Metrology approval requirements in your destination market

MOQ is 100 pcs for most mechanical water meters (500 pcs for brass check valves, 5,000 pcs for plastic strainers), and prices are negotiable by specification and volume. We supply customers in China, Western Europe, Southeast Asia, South America, North America and Africa, and we work to our motto: sincerity first, quality foremost, service matters most.

Compliance note. All Gaoxiang water meters hold ISO 4064 regulation approval certificates. We do not claim US drinking-water certifications (such as NSF) for any model. If your project requires specific approvals, confirm the exact requirements with our sales team before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a multi-jet and a single-jet mechanical water meter?
Both are rotary-wing meters, but a multi-jet meter splits the incoming flow through several ports while a single-jet meter uses one nozzle. Multi-jet spreads the load across the rotor and tolerates debris and varying flow better; single-jet is simpler and more compact but suits clean water and steady flow.
Can I order a mechanical water meter with pulse output for remote reading?
Yes. We build pulse-output mechanical meters such as the LXS15-300 with 1/10/100 Liter/Pulse output. Tell us the pulse value you need and how your reading system counts the pulses, and we will confirm the matching model.
Do your mechanical water meters hold ISO 4064 approval?
All Gaoxiang water meters hold ISO 4064 regulation approval certificates. Our production is ISO 9001:2008 certified and complies with national regulations for testing and metrology calibration.
What is your MOQ?
100 pcs for most mechanical water meters, 500 pcs for brass check valves and 5,000 pcs for plastic strainers. Prices are negotiable depending on specification and order quantity, so send your model list or tender document for a quotation.
Which meter should I use on a DN100 mainline?
High-flow mainline duty normally points to a Woltman turbine meter such as the LXLC-250E, which covers DN50-300mm. Final selection depends on your flow range, allowable pressure loss and water quality. Send the duty point and we will recommend a configuration.
How do I contact Gaoxiang for a quotation?
