What a Flanged Water Meter Does on a Large-Diameter Main

A flanged water meter connects to the pipeline through two bolted flange joints rather than threaded ends. On DN50 and larger lines that matters for practical reasons: the joint can be tightened to hold working pressure without distorting the meter body, the meter can be removed and refitted with standard gaskets and bolts, and the full-bore flow path keeps the pressure drop across the meter low so pumps are not working against an unnecessary restriction.

Most large diameter water meters are velocity meters. In a Woltmann (axial turbine) design, water travels straight through the body and turns a rotor that is geared or magnetically coupled to a register. In a multi-jet design, water is directed through several jets onto a smaller impeller. Woltmann meters are the usual choice for high, steady flows on trunk mains and plant headers; multi-jet meters suit lower and more variable flows where a compact body is preferred. Both principles are established, well-understood metering methods, and ISO 4064 is the international standard that sets out the metrological and technical requirements for meters of this kind.

Two construction details are worth checking when comparing options. A removable-element meter separates the measuring cartridge from the meter body, so the cartridge can be lifted out for inspection or service while the body stays bolted in the line. A dry-type register keeps the dial and gear train sealed away from the water, which protects the readout from condensation and sediment carried in the flow.

This is the heavy-duty option for plant headers, bulk transfer lines, and district metering. The Woltmann measuring element is built for continuous forward flow, and the removable-element construction lets a maintenance crew open the body, withdraw the measuring cartridge, and return the meter to service without cutting the pipe. The dry-type register keeps the readout separate from the water. Sizes run from DN50 through DN300, and the meter is normally specified with flanged end connections for direct bolting into the main.

LXSG-15E-50E large-diameter flange mechanical water meter

The LXSG-15E-50E is a flange-connected mechanical meter for line sizes at the larger end of the mechanical range, used where a straightforward direct-reading register is preferred. It is a good fit for commercial buildings, secondary mains, and industrial service lines where flow is measured mechanically without remote data collection. Body material, flange drilling pattern, and the exact size and flow range are confirmed at quotation, because these depend on the pipeline standard you are working to.

Specifying a Bulk Water Meter for Industrial and Municipal Service

Sizing is where most metering problems begin. A meter that is too large will under-register at low flows, when much of the water in a distribution network actually moves; a meter that is too small wears quickly and creates avoidable pressure loss at peak demand. Work from the flow range the line will really see, not only from the pipe diameter.

• Line size and flange standard, including the drilling pattern and bolt holes
• Minimum and maximum flow rates the meter must register, and how long each lasts
• Continuous duty versus intermittent, batch, or seasonal operation
• Installation orientation and the straight, unobstructed pipe runs available upstream and downstream
• Upstream strainer to keep debris away from the turbine or impeller
• Register access for manual reading, plus whether pulse output or a remote reading meter is needed
• Body and internal materials suited to the water being measured
